  Brown Mallee

This piece wasn't turned, it was carved.  Upside down, it looks like a big mussel shell.  I liked the shape so well I wanted to keep it - so I just carved out the center.  Before caring it, I turned a small foot on the bottom - which is on the left side in the picture.  I had hoped that the distribution of weight in the finished piece would make it possible to stand on this foot alone - but it didn't work, so I put a walnut base on it.

  Amboyna

Another Asian bowl.  The bowl in this case is round - it rests on a blackwood base.  The bowl can be tilted to almost any angle.

   Brown mallee

Another hollow form suspended on an eccentric base.  The black in the brown mallee is pitch which seems to have crystalized.

  Cocobolo

Cocobolo is such a beautiful wood that it seems only the simplest forms do it justise.

  Eucalyptus and ebonized cherry

I'm not sure what kind of eucalyptus these "flowers" are, but they look like red mallee. 7

 Grenadillo

Another attemp at avoiding a bottom on the bowl.

  Singapore ball

I made several of the balls to develop some techniques for another project.  They are fun to spin as you throw them in the air and then catch.

  Brown mallee

Another hollow form on an eccentric base - this one is really tall

   Three cups

Three amboyna cups suspended on eccentric ebony stems stuck in a red mallee burl base.
